I have stopped listening to THR Raaga. I now listen to Minnal FM. While THR Raaga irritates me with an overkill of noisy ads, Minnal FM makes me cogitate as men offering alternative life enhancers speak and peddle their stuff to the gullible Malaysian Indian masses, predominantly Hindu. These alternative life enhancers mostly are smokescreens. I won’t say to beware of these alternative life enhancer peddlers but just be aware of them and not trust them at face value then go on to spend your hard earned monies on them.
Alternative life enhancers’ claims
Alternative life enhancers always talk about energy, the influence of planets, gemstones, aura and numbers in human life. Also included are their supplementary smaller scale jathagam and saami pakuran deeds.
Before going deep, let me cite my own experience on saami paakuran, gods like Kaliama and yellai or kaaval deivam like Muniswarar and Karuppu saami and energy bracelet. This is an excerpt taken from my personal blog:
“Now, your mind is such convinced that you can ‘download’ the gods into you at any time of your fancy and you can send god back from where he came from (who knows where) when your propagating, boon bestowing, problem solving, evil withholding and fear mongering endeavours are done. Then, it would be time for the god to malai yereran. (climb the mountain) It is a slang for telling that god is now leaving the earthly being, bringing an end to the mortal and immortal mediating session until god decides to ‘haunt’ his devotee again. Strangely, no one gets into trance while working, eating and sleeping. It is only at an earthly pre-determined time where gods would inhabit and then leave the body. God has no say here; human dictates, god obeys.”
You can read the whole blog here.
As for the energy bracelet, we were duped into buying it due to the peddlers saying it has infra red magnetic energy that is potent to cure stroke and a host of other diseases. The alternative life enhancers salesmen showed us videos of magical cures of people (everyone were Malaysian Indian Hindus and poor) beset with chronic illness. Now, I am convinced that the videos were staged. Bought the bracelet for RM 700 due to my well meaning aunt’s pressure which the alternative life enhancers salesmen capitalised on. One for me, one for my grandma. I am still the same and my grandma is now senile. While I will ask the salesmen narukku nu naalu kelvi (4 peeved questions) if I ever meet them again, my grandma would ask, “Yaare pa neengeh?” (Who are you people) That’s about the benefit the cure all magnetic bracelets gave me and my grandma.
I have many experiences involving alternative life enhancers. While some are sincere, many of these alternative life enhancers are only out to make a quick buck over people’s ignorance, difficulty and desperation and mostly faith.
We all seem to detract RPT for his money centric modus operandi. He has an early morning slot in Minnal FM where he gives his pearls of wisdom. I listen anyway because it doesn’t cost me a penny and sounds uplifting anyway. Same goes to the inspirational talks that Professor Kader Ibrahim gives. The problem however, starts when these lots extend products of specious nature at cekik darah prices. The likes of Aboorvas (the English on his website also tak betul, he wants to betulkan the lives of people) and numerology expert Dr Uthaya who also have slots in Minnal FM talk as though they’ve got the panacea to all the troubles plaguing mankind.
These alternative life enhancers men talk about energy all the time, incorporating grandiose life enhancing claims which are damn attractive to the unthinking brain. The claims that advertise products of deceptive and dubious nature like Energy Pendant, Royal Super Energy Pyramid, Agni Hothiram, thagudu, special gemstones, number value in name, etc inveigle people. They say all of it will turn around their lives for the better. Giving highbrow definitions for their products like ‘pirabanja shakti’ (the power of universe), ‘negative ions’, ‘if its good energy, it will rotate clockwise, if its bad energy, it will rotate anti clockwise,’ ‘when you wear this pendant, the aura around you will change without you knowing it’ (this was what the pannade magnetic bracelet alternative life enhancers salesmen told me), ‘made from mercury (mercury is toxic to humans by the way, like asbestos), rudraksham, (I’d wear the rudraksha but there are no university/research center accredited scientific journals on the benefits of rudraksha like the herb turmeric. Rudraksha revolves around religion, rather than science.) ven sanggu, velamburi sanggu, etc, etc, these alternative life enhancers boggle the mind, making us believe their grandeur claims. Paling lawak sekali, lava in the pendant. Lava is molten rock – you can’t contain lava in a pendant. Cooled lava is called magma – magma becomes igneous rock that’s porous and is able to float on water – basic geology. And, they have qualifications as Dr and Dato. But are they the kind of doctors who do brain surgery while the patient is awake, perform emergency orthopedic surgery or angioplasty, saving the lives of millions? NOPE.
Please spend 12 minutes watching this brain surgery video performed on a patient who is awake (Warning, it’s graphic). Doctors found that the brain has no pain sensors and that brain surgery can be performed while communicating with the patient and immediately detect anomalies straight from the horse’s mouth. GOOSEBUMPS!! I see no use of the pendant or pyramid here, only years of research and passion to truly save lives, hands on.
The fundamental flaws of alternative life enhancers
Okay, first of all alternative life enhancers are way too general. They speak like they account for every single person on the planet, 7.3 billion of our fellow humans. Their trade won’t sell in Scandinavian countries, just to name a few.
These alternative life enhancers are deceptive and twist science and reason. They don’t provide any research proof for their claims and not an iota of evidence. Yak, yak, yak on energy but never giving a scientifically researched proof. Energy can neither be destructed nor created – energy only changes form. Einstein proved that. Every drop of water on earth are billions of years old. The water cycle proved that. These alternative life enhancers can even say that the location of countries contribute to their state – Japan was routed by 2 atom bombs and is located at a tectonic plate movement hotbed. Yet, it’s a developed first world country. Singapore literally has no natural resources and is the Asian Tiger. Both countries overcame their adversity by the virtue of effective leadership, astute economical policies and professionalism, not by believing in dubious powers. Billions of years ago, when humans were yet to exist, the continents we see today weren’t even formed. Read super continent Pangea. Effing watch the movie Ice Age Continental Drift. And if you don’t want to believe in continental drift, Malaysia was once off seismic activity zone. Now we’re in – Kinabalu earthquake = evidence. And these alternative life enhancers have the gall to say countries face problems due to their geographical locations. I won’t blame them. I blame you for being so ignorant despite having the repository of information, the internet on your finger tips. It’s not enough that you watch Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar and make a Gaptain joke about it. Read up on real life space discoveries. Going ‘Proud to be Indian‘, when India launched its MOM isn’t enough nor helpful. Don’t concentrate on the length of minachi’s skirt. Concentrate on worldly knowledge.
Jews are religious but they have increasingly become secular and scientific too – winning a great deal of Nobel prize for their breakthrough in science and other fields that benefited billions of people. Jonas Salk, a Jew, came up with polio cure. He didn’t patent his discovery although he knew it would make him a billionaire. When asked who patented his groundbreaking vaccine, this was Dr Salk’s reply,”No one. Could you patent the sun?” The vaccine is calculated to be worth $7 billion had it been patented – 7 billion is helluva amount of money in Salk’s days. It also meant denying polio vaccine access to the poor. Dr Salk wanted the polio vaccine to benefit those who need it most – the poor. Arunachalam Muruganantham too did not use IPR rights to make millions out of low cost sanitary napkin making machines he invented. He wanted rural womenfolk in India benefit from the disposable and hygienic sanitary pads and create employment for 1 million rural women across India. If these alternative life enhancers truly want people to benefit (that’s what they always say, ‘we are bringing this product/service for your benefit because we want you to be well and prosper’) they should give their products/service free of charge, not put extortionate price tags. The poor Malaysian Indians (which is a large portion of our community) definitely can’t afford them pendants and pyramids.
Changing your name in accordance with your planetary alignment/date of birth number will make your life turn for the better, prevent diseases, change your personality/attitude and make your relationship with others better. For starters, the universe is always expanding and changing. Pluto just got upgraded as a planet again – the debate is ongoing though. Kepler Space telescope is finding hundreds of planet out there, thousands of light years away, zooming into those located in the habitable zone, don’t those recently found planets count?
I heard on Minnal FM on how changing names numerology wise would change daughter in law – mother in law relationship. Another one was how if one changes his/her name according to numerology suggestion, illnesses won’t affect him or her – types of illnesses, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. A very good marketing strategy indeed since all three illnesses affect Malaysian Indians most. One doesn’t need their name altered according to numerology to be those diseases free – practicing a healthy lifestyle would suffice. Malaysian Chinese serbu padang early in the morning to exercise and keep fit. Malaysian Indians serbu these alternative life enhancers to wear pendant, change name and then whack mutton curry in the belief that the pendant and name change will prevent cholesterol from clogging their arteries. And, how do one wearing a pendant, a gemstone, changing their name, etc will cure diseases, accumulate wealth, change mindsets and attitudes? If it is that potent, effing present one to Najib so that he’ll change his corrupt ways. Or does Najib already have one, hence the 2.6 billion in donations? If wearing pendant and changing names can cure diseases, why do we need hospitals? Why need to push our children to become medical doctors?
A correlation between outlandish claims about Hinduism and alternative life enhancers
Some Hindus have the penchant to twist stuff to further their ends. And, true Hindus, seeking the truth fall into these pitfalls dug by dishonest Hindus.
This video says that the Nadaraja statue in CERN is kept to identify the god particle and talks about the great physicist sir CV Raman. It is a good ego boost except for the fact that it’s made up. India gave CERN the Nadaraja statue as a gift and Carl Sagan mentioned a metaphorical quote regarding the symbolic cosmic dance. CERN didn’t keep the statue as the catalyst to find the god particle – it is on a purely metaphor basis, not literal. Blogs don’t account as hard and fast facts and investigated, internationally approved and solid evidence and many mislead – the links I provided are published by CERN themselves. Up to you which one you want to believe. And, the god particle isn’t what its name suggests – scientists named the particle as goddamn particle because it’s so goddamn hard to detect. The particle’s given, formal name is Higgs Boson particle.
This is a video showing the remains of Ghatotkatch, Bheema’s giant son. It says that National Geographic verified it. National Geographic Society later denied the claim, calling the news a hoax, the giant skeleton, a Photoshop contest entry.
Many Hindus put their foot down that Robert J Oppenheimer had took the nuclear bomb formula from the Bagavad Gita and learnt Sanskrit to understand the Gita in its purest form to get the full formula of nuclear bomb making. They showed me some blogs which are verbatim in context (come to think of it, this is a blog as well and I will encourage you to do your own reading and research) and the video below as proof that Oppenheimer stated so.
Oppenheimer never stated that he derived the formula to make nuclear bombs from the Gita. He says, ” A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” He never mentions that this is not the first nuclear explosion in the history of mankind either. Him saying, “Well, not in the modern times,” when questioned by a student after the success of Project Manhattan and the assumption that he is referring to Mahabaratham is well, an assumption that’s unsubstantiated. Point is, it did not come out of the horse’s mouth like it does in the brain surgery video.
The following is what Oppenheimer said about his love affair with Bhagavad Gita and Sanskrit, taken from Wiki:
Oppenheimer’s diverse interests sometimes interrupted his focus on projects. In 1933 he learned Sanskrit and met the Indologist Arthur W. Ryder at Berkeley. He read the Bhagavad Gita in the original Sanskrit and later he cited it as one of the books that most shaped his philosophy of life. His close confidant and colleague, Nobel Prize winner Isidor Rabi, later gave his own interpretation:
Oppenheimer was overeducated in those fields, which lie outside the scientific tradition, such as his interest in religion, in the Hindu religion in particular, which resulted in a feeling of mystery of the universe that surrounded him like a fog. He saw physics clearly, looking toward what had already been done, but at the border he tended to feel there was much more of the mysterious and novel than there actually was … [he turned] away from the hard, crude methods of theoretical physics into a mystical realm of broad intuition.
Points to note here:
1. It says that OPPENHEIMER’S DIVERSE INTERESTS WHICH INCLUDE SANSKRIT AND THE HINDU RELIGION ACTUALLY DISTRACTED HIM FROM WORK – PROJECTS.
2. Nowhere it is said that OPPENHEIMER LEARNT HOW TO MAKE NUCLEAR BOMBS FROM THE GITA.
3. He only said that the GITA IS ONE OF THE BOOKS THAT MOST SHAPED HIS PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE, NOT SHAPED HIS NUCLEAR BOMB MAKING FORMULA
4. Oppenheimer did not TREAT THE HINDU RELIGION AS SCIENTIFIC , RATHER, SPIRITUAL.
I am appalled that most only argue about Oppenheimer quoting Bagavad Gita but ignorantly leave out the implications of nuclear tech that has its most telling effect on Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters and very probably the future lest a nuclear war breaks out. Oppenheimer’s quote in the video is reflective of the former. We are only proud in saying that nuclear weapons were used in Mahabaratam – Kurukshetra war (which is unsubstantiated anyway) but we fail to see the destruction it brought about and how horrible war is when done in scripture or real life. I can so relate this to the alternative life enhancers. Instead of living life to the fullest, we fear life and buy various thagudu, thayuthu, go see jathagam, go see saami to try to improve life.
Another one is evolution – some Hindus say Darwin used Dasavataram to come up with the theory of evolution. From life in water to modern man. Even I believed it until it struck me that Manu, the Adam and Noah of Hinduism is depicted existent on the first avatar, the Matsya avatar. It maybe reflect Darwinism metaphorically but to say Charles Darwin copied such a bare bones concept doesn’t account for the whole broad theory of evolution. Theory of evolution outlines that man evolved from apes. I don’t want to go further because it will hurt myself and you reading. All I’m saying is, kannal parpathum poi, kaathal ketpathum poi, theevere visaranaiye mei. (What you see is a lie, what you hear is a lie, investigating further is the truth.)
And, isn’t it funny that we need whites to say they referred to Bhagavad Gita or learnt Sanskrit to even say out that Hindu culture has any palpable worth? We can’t even take pride in our own Hindu culture as it is – we need whites learning Sanskrit, quoting the Gita, converting to Hinduism (there is no way to convert to Hinduism because more than religion, it’s a way of life) and taking kavadi to believe that Hinduism has got what it takes. On the other hand, some add half truths and whole lies to make other gullible Hindus believe that whites used Hindu scriptures to further their modern ends and then be ‘proud to be Hindu’. This is what these alternative life enhancers people do – give larger than life descriptions, make a Himalaya out of a molehill, add extra fitting here and there, add salt and spice to dupe people so that they can make easy money. In my opinion, we don’t need to make such grandiose depictions and quote whites (which aren’t the truth anyway) to know that Hinduism is good. Hinduism is good on its own – it doesn’t need white or even brown crutches to stand. Hinduism doesn’t sanction lies in order to make itself appear superior. It advocates humility. You wanna attain moksha? Being humble is the first and most important step. And honest and earnest.
Alternative life enhancers are what they are – ALTERNATIVE
Instead of spending so much money on such alternative life enhancers, save the money for your children’s higher education. Buy and eat vegetables and fruits rather than spending money to buy gemstones and change your names taking the alternative life enhancers word that it would preserve your health. Join a gym and get exercise equipment and use them. Get insurance and medical card rather than thagudu and thayuthu. It is said that god is omnipresent – thoonleyum irupar, thurumbilum irupar. Be service minded – you get what you give. There is no greater blessings than the thanks you get from people you’ve helped. Mostly, read more, be critical minded and do a research before believing anything. There is always 2 sides to a story. You get so mad when TV3 airs pro BN news but get mad when someone tells you that Hinduism is only metaphorically scientific, not literally as portrayed by some folks, giving you unbiased, researched reports.
It’s okay if you want to believe in these alternative life enhancers peeps. But, do be aware that what matters more is what you think and do rather than believing that these things will help you upgrade your life and livelihood. Belief can be either your wing or your crutch. Believing in yourself is paramount. No amount of thagudu or thayathu will help you improve if you lack belief in yourself. If you don’t help yourself, even god can’t help you.
Kuttiyundu thayathule vekkire nambikkaiye ungge mele veingge, jeykalam. Nambikai illatha manushan verum ponom (Put the confidence you put in the puny amulet in you, you will win. A human without self assurance is akin to a dead body)
