29. 3. 2014. Today is Earth Day, the day we, humans are supposed to show our love and appreciation at the blue planet that so graciously gave us a home.
How do we show our love towards our blue planet today? Switch off all electricity consuming appliances today for one hour, willing the earth to have a much needed break, once a year.
Is that enough? Will the ephemeral electricity usage stoppage heal the earth from the bruises mankind gave her in return for the earth’s clemency?
We waste power at will for 365 days and then become instant environment champions for one hour on the last Saturday in the month of March. Surely we know better than that!
We should be prudent at all times; switch off electrical appliances when not in use EVERY DAY. Observing a conscious blackout for one hour, once a year is not going to make a real difference.
We should drill this energy conserving conduct by action, not by words and be in a self induced blackout for a mere hour.
While I am at it, I might as well point out another hypocrisy that is totally oblivious to many.
Let’s observe a moment of silence for all the scientists who say that CFC from air conditions is eroding the ozone layer while sitting in air conditioned offices and labs.
I am not denying nor overlooking scientific inventions that benefited and took mankind to a whole new level and I’m sure scientists are in the process of inventing environment and ecosystem friendly air condition as we speak but this whole Earth Day gig rubs off as delusional.
Let’s take care of our blue planet every single hour; let’s celebrate Earth’s Day daily, subliminally. It’s not like we can go shopping somewhere else. Yen karutheh purinjitha makkale? 😛
