Maari 2015 is directed by Balaji Mohan who gave Kadhalil Sothapuvathu Eppudi and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum. The leading roles in Maari are essayed by Dhanush, Vijay Yesudas and Kajal Aggarwal. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander.
Maari is a movie that glorifies gangsterism to the hilt. The story revolves around pigeon betting business but it’s nowhere near the intensity and reality showed in the rooster fighting betting in Aadukalam.
The plot of Maari
Maari (Dhanush) dances, frolics, trashes up people and utters a smattering of punch dialogues with “Senjuruven,” being his most favourite word.
The story line of Maari is typical, Sridevi (Kajal) hates Maari at first and eventually develops a soft spot for him. Maari’s kainge, Sanikilamai (Robo Shankar),and Adithangi yethi uderaning (egging up) Maari that girls like guys who torture them and nowadays all girls like bad boys only.
Kajal plays nice to Dhanush and he proposes to her which she rejects but in a subtle way. She gets close with Dhanush but subsequently betrays him by exposing him to the police, Arjun Kumar (Vijay Yesudas).
There is a touching flashback on why Dhanush became a rowdy. Dhanush is shown as a guy of a tough and bad exterior but a soft and good interior who struggles to hide the latter. He only shows his soft side at the pigeons.
Vijay Yesudas, plays the police officer and he is shown as the bad guy – being a policeman while Dhanush is shown as the good guy, being the rowdy. What an irony. And, nowadays, it’s a growing trend in Tamil movies for the villains to be more good looking than the lead male protagonist (hero), seen in Osthi, Thuppaki, VIP and now Maari.
Kajal too doesn’t fall in love with the dashing, handsome policeman but falls for the karat, aberrant rowdy saying, a good guy can’t be trusted coz he will turn bad, but a bad guy can be trusted because he is true to himself and others therefore he is good (Something like that lah, these kinds of dialogues delude me).
Dhanush rejects Kajal’s love profess and the movie ends. Kononnya punishment for her betrayal la.. This is the only difference in this movie – Dhanush doesn’t go behind girls. I hope machas notice this.
Saya Marah Maari bila tengok itu Maari
There are many fundamentally wrong punch dialogues in Maari and the ‘Potta pasanga than rape pannuvangge, naa ambala, unmaiyana ambala rape pannamaatan’, takes the crown. I was like, “Bro, do you even social science?” Males get raped too, so not raping anyone makes one a decent human being, not a true man or woman for that matter. Because Indian movies don’t acknowledge that is the reason many Indians think males can’t be raped. Baca buku tak mau – mau tengok filem jugak. Filem plak mislead. I hear you saying it’s just a movie brah but you can say that the Romeo and Juliet movie is a tight slap for money minded Indian girls but this one just a movie? Yenna bang, goreng ah? Yep, movie only but why 60% of Malaysian prison population is Indian? Unequal opportunities yes, but look at the Chinese. Book fair takde India mob tapi bila cancel Tamil movie screening pecah cermin. Masih, ‘it’s a movie only?’
My feeling after watching Maari: “Ada paavinggela, ithe paaka tha kannadi ye odechi, arpattam panninggela da?” But, come to think of it, that’s what such movies teach, that rowdism gets you the money, fame and girls will fall at your feet.
Maari doesn’t do justice to Dhanush’s acting talent. Expecting better from Dhanush. Maari Masala Kaari.
